Chess has been around for over a thousand years, and yet somehow, it’s never felt more modern.

From ancient battlefields to Netflix series, from grandmasters to casual mobile players, chess has quietly become one of the most popular games in the world again. And alongside it, a new genre has emerged: single-player chess puzzles: fast, focused, and surprisingly addictive.

At CleverGoat, we’ve taken that idea and built something simple but compelling: Takes, our daily solitaire chess puzzle.

But before we get into why it’s so fun… let’s rewind.

The Origins of Chess: A Game That Never Stopped Evolving

Chess traces its roots back to 6th-century India, where it began as a game called chaturanga. From there, it spread across Persia, into the Islamic world, and eventually into Europe — evolving along the way into the game we recognize today.

By the 15th century, modern chess rules had taken shape. The queen became the most powerful piece, bishops gained range, and the game sped up into something far more dynamic.

Fast forward to today, and chess is everywhere:

  • Played competitively at the highest levels
  • Streamed online to millions
  • Practiced casually on phones during coffee breaks

And perhaps most interestingly — it’s no longer just about playing another person.

The Chess Boom (Again)

Chess has had multiple waves of popularity, but the most recent boom has been impossible to ignore.

Platforms like Chess.com and Lichess have brought millions of new players into the game. The pandemic accelerated this trend, and pop culture moments (like The Queen’s Gambit) turned chess into something aspirational, stylish, and cool again.

But here’s what really changed:

👉 People started playing chess alone.

Not just full games — but puzzles.

Why Chess Puzzles Are So Addictive

If you’ve ever solved a chess puzzle, you’ll know the feeling: You stare at the board. Something doesn’t quite click. Then suddenly, it does.

That moment of clarity? That’s the hook.

Chess puzzles strip the game down to its essence:

  • No long openings
  • No waiting for an opponent
  • Just pure problem-solving

They give you:

  • Immediate engagement
  • Clear goals
  • Fast feedback

And importantly — they’re time-efficient. You can solve one in under a minute, but still feel like you’ve exercised your brain.

Enter: Takes — A Different Kind of Chess Puzzle

At CleverGoat, we wanted to build a chess puzzle that feels:

  • Simple to understand
  • Satisfying to solve
  • Worth coming back to every day

So we created Takes.

🎯 The Goal

Capture pieces until only one remains. If there’s a King, it must be the final piece standing.

The Rules

  • Drag a piece to capture another piece
  • Every move must be a capture
  • If there’s a King, it cannot be captured. It must make the final capture

That’s it.

No complicated setups. No long explanations. Just you, the board, and the puzzle.
